High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Intellectual domain

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Physical domain

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Creative domain

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Social and emotional domain

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Guyra Central School, HPGE is part of everyday practice. We are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive at our school.

  • Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
  • Groups are flexible for collaboration and presentation.
  • Students learn from tasks that promote choice, authenticity, and critical and creative thinking.
Across our school

Our school recognises that every student is individual, and we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths outside the classroom.

  • All students, including high potential and gifted students, are encouraged to take on leadership roles through student representative council leadership, and leadership of major events including the community ANZAC Day and assemblies.
  • Talent in the arts is celebrated and extended through our Creative Arts nights and in 2026 by our K-12 School Musical. We also have a school band program in secondary school
  • Students are encouraged and supported to develop their confidence and communication skills through Public Speaking competitions, including the district Lions Club Public Speaking event.
  • When subjects are not available at Ungarie Central School, students in Stages 5 and 6 are supported to access a broad range of learning opportunities through Aurora and/or Distance Education ensuring students can pursue their interests and aspirations. Students gifted academically are also supported to apply for Aurora Selective School in junior years
  • In years 7-12 students and families can opt-in to the Big Picture Education program at Guyra Central School which is an alternative program that builds learning around student interest and allows students to excel in their areas of passion and expertise. For more information about Big Picture please contact us at school.
Across NSW

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide programs that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

  • Guyra Central School continues to prioritise sporting participation in a multitude of competitions including gala days, knock out competitions and selection through to zone, regional and state carnivals.
  • Students at Guyra Central School also engage in statewide academic and cultural activities including debating & public speaking, dance  and Indigenous events and statewide programs.
