Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is an evidence-based framework that brings together the whole school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behaviour and academic outcomes for children and young people.

PBL is a school-wide framework that is developed by the students, staff and community to suit the unique needs of the school.

When implemented consistently, schools will begin to see improvements such as:

What does it look like at Guyra Central School

Secondary

In the secondary school, we have a small dedicated PBL team that drives the implementation and ongoing evaluation of the framework. They meet fortnightly to assess the current data and decide on the "school focus". This focus is communicated to the students at our Monday morning assembly and then expanded through a dedicated PC lesson where students are explicitly taught the expectation. Staff are also provided with some common language and phrases to use when correcting behaviour.

Tokens

When students are demonstrating our values of Pride, Respect and Responsibility, teachers can reward those students by giving them PBL tokens. These tokens accumulate and have value in two ways. Firstly, students can 'spend' these tokens in the "PBL" shop. They can redeem their tokens for a variety of rewards including pool tickets, canteen vouchers uniform items and Kmart gift cards. Each of these rewards has a a ‘token cost’ associated with it. Once the tokens are spent, they come off their Balance to Spend. The other value that these tokens have is their accumulation towards the end of term PBL Rewards Day. In order to be eligible for this Reward, students must have earned 25 tokens in a term. Spending the tokens in the PBL shop does not remove them from the students’ Rewards Day total.

Primary

In the Primary School, a small but dedicated team meet fortnightly to drive the continual implementation of systems and processes. Fortnightly data is analysed, and a school focus is identified. This focus is communicated to all students at our Monday morning wellbeing assembly.

Snowbursts

Across K-6, students work towards achieving Snowbursts. These can be earned through displaying Guyra Central School’s core values Pride, Respect and Responsibility. Every five weeks, students' efforts are celebrated during the PBL rewards session. Snowbursts are tallied and students choose the reward that aligns with their total count. There are 5 tiers of activities to choose from; copper, bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Students have displayed excitement around this system and feel their efforts at school are recognised in a positive way.

Positive Levels

At the end of each term, we hold a PBL Rewards Assembly to award for their positive behaviour. These levels are reached through the accumulation of PBL tokens over the course of the year.

Bronze - 25 tokens

Silver - 50 tokens

Gold - 100 tokens

Platinum - 150 tokens

PBL rewards day

At the end of each term, students who have satisfies the eligibility are invited to attend a PBL rewards day. Students who have received 25 tokens for the term and not been on a level D or E at any time in the term. We regularly survey students to ensure that these Rewards Days are enticing to the students.

We have taken students to Armidale for roller skating and 10 pin bowling and Green Valley Farm. It is a really positive experience for students and staff.

Other Guyra Central School PBL Initiatives

Uniform Draw
Guyra Central School is proudly a uniform school. School uniforms promote a sense of belonging for students and contribute to a positive identity for the school community. To encourage students to wear their GCS uniform proudly, we have implemented a weekly uniform draw. Each day in Roll Call, teachers are asked to check off whether students in their roll call are in full school uniform. At the end of each week, students who have been in uniform all week go into a draw. The winner of this draw is able to select from a range of prizes, including inflatable pool toys, fishing lures, basketballs and many more. The runner up each week receives a canteen voucher.
Attendance Draw
At Guyra Central School, we understand that attendance is an important factor for success at school. To support our students in attending school and achieving their educational goals, we have implemented an attendance draw. Each fortnight at our Head Teacher Awards Assembly, students who have been at school for 85% of the fortnight prior, are loaded onto a ‘Wheel of Names’. Two students are chosen from the spinning wheel to receive a canteen voucher.
