Aboriginal Education
Our school is committed to supporting all students to feel known, valued, and cared for to learn, grow, and belong. We are dedicated to providing a safe , inclusive learning environment that is culturally inclusive. We work closely with students, elders, family and community including the AECG to drive meaningful change and improve outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students.
We offer fantastic opportunities in the area of Indigenous Education. We have 2 outstanding Aboriginal Education Officers - Eunice & Tremane - who support our Indigenous students K-12. Our Aboriginal Studies classes in Year 8 and in Stage 5 are involved in a wide range of events and activities across the school and community. All of our teachers build Indigenous perspectives into their teaching and we celebrate Indigenous events like NAIDOC & Sorry Day during the year.
Aboriginal Learning & Engagement Centre (ALEC)
Guyra Central has been engaged in the ALEC program for the past 3 years. The centre has a designated space within the school which provides a base for Indigenous Education and programs. The aims of the ALEC are to support Indigenous students in year 10, 11 & 12 to achieve their HSC and/or embark on a meaningful post-school pathway. The ALEC provides student with academic support as well as support where needed to take on opportunities within and outside the school including the Elsa Dixon SBAT program. The centre has been crucial in supporting Indigenous students in all areas of school life.
Connections with University of New England
Guyra Central School has developed a very close and positive relationship with UNE - this is particularly the case with Oorala which is the Aboriginal Education Centre within UNE. Our Aboriginal students engage regularly with Oorala for enrichment and gifted and talented days as well as support for University options and pathways.
Senior AECG
Guyra and surrounding local areas have an AECG which meets each term. The AECG provides a critical role in advising Guyra Central School in Indigenous Education and supporting Indigenous students and initiatives. Current AECG President is Tremane Patterson and he can be contacted at tremane.patterson@det.nsw.edu.au
Junior AECG
GCS also has a junior AECG made up of Indigenous students from yr4-12. This provides valuable student voice and leadership within the school. The students engage in a variety of leadership and cultural activities and help plan and organise key events during the year at school.
